An air compressor running with inefficiencies can cause your utility bills to balloon quickly, cutting into the bottom line in a big way. Those concerned about electricity usage can complete some easy fixes to help reign in costs.

Here are some that we often recommend to help reduce compressor-related costs:

  • Leaks in the Compressor: Leaks in your compressor can cost hundreds of dollars, with expenses increasing each day it goes unfixed. These can often be found by listening for a hissing noise when near the compressor, though that may not be an option for employees working in a loud factory or body shop.

If you have access to an ultrasonic acoustic detector, that is typically promoted as the most reliable tool for confirming and locating air compressor leaks. Otherwise, manufacturers recommend locating and turning the facility's supply shut-off valve is the best option that does not require specialty tools. If the pressure gauge shows a considerable drop-off then it's likely a leak is happening somewhere in the system.

  • Air Pressure: In most cases, you can increase the efficiency of your air compressor by lowering the system's pressure by 2 pound-force per square inch (PSI). This will reduce electrical costs by at least 2%.

  • Maintenance: It should go without saying that every compressor should receive proper care from its owner. Daily monitoring and regularly-scheduled audits as recommended by the manufacturer are requirements for ensuring your unit is working properly and at its most efficient level (thereby saving your business money).

  • Filter fixes: One of the most important components of an air compressor is its filter. It is fairly easy to check the functionality of a filter and determine whether or not it's working efficiently. Typically, this involves turning the air compressor off, removing the filter top cover, removing and inspecting the filter element. Some manufacturers recommend performing this check at least once per month.

Hopefully, with these fixes, your business will save not only on electricity costs but also lengthen the lifespan of the compressor itself.
