How to Make the Right Call When Choosing an Air Compressor

Given how many products are on the market, it can be difficult to convince yourself you're making the right decision when purchasing a new air compressor. This only gets more difficult when involving salesmen from several different companies in the process, each with different ideas that fit their agenda instead of your needs (think of the "too many cooks in the kitchen" expression).

Here are a few tips from our team to help you narrow down the search:

  1. Find your baseline demand or air usage, typically cubic feet per minute (CFM)
  2. Is your demand variable? If it ranges between 30 and 80% within a few shifts, you should consider a speed drive air compressor*
  3. Energy efficiency. Try to find a compressor with a Wye Delta or reduced voltage starting to reduce the inrush current
  4. Maintenance repair and cost. Ask how much costs would be for one year of service, don't let anyone give an estimate
  5. Price. The most expensive air compressor is not always the best choice for your needs

*Remember, variable speed drives are expensive. If the drive fails after the warranty period, if could be a repair costing you upwards of $5,000. If you only operate one hsift, then the stardard load/no-load with a timed shutdown would be an excellent option.

Typically, if you feel comfortable talking with your compressed air expert (not experts), you will end up with a great air compressor. If you're still looking for that expert, please contact our team by calling 866-778-6572 or sending an email to info@compressorworld.com
